Why this tour
Meiji Shrine sits inside a forest of roughly 100,000 trees, planted by hand a century ago in the middle of the city. At 8 in the morning it’s a different world from the afternoon crowds — mist in the trees, the sound of gravel underfoot, and locals quietly starting their day with a prayer.
Walking it with a local changes what you see: why you bow at the torii gate, what the sake barrels mean, how to wash your hands at the temizuya, and how to make a wish properly. Guests tell us they used what they learned at every shrine for the rest of their trip.
Afterwards we cross into Harajuku — five minutes and a complete change of universe — for a relaxed brunch where you can ask your guide anything about Tokyo.
Good to know
- The most peaceful of our tours — ideal if you land jet-lagged and wake up early anyway.
- Families welcome; the walk is flat, shaded, and stroller-friendly.
- No dress code beyond common sense — your guide will show you the etiquette.
- Pairs naturally with an afternoon exploring Harajuku and Omotesando on your own.
What guests say about this tour
“I really loved this tour with Tomo! It’s such a tranquil part of Tokyo and really nice way to spend the morning. I had visited other shrines and temples before but without a guide. It was so nice having a guide for this and learn more about the culture, religion, history etc. Thanks for a great tour!!”
“Arisa was one of our favorite tour guides of the trip. (And we have had lot of guides) She was knowledgeable and kind. We learned a lot and used that knowledge for the rest of our trip. I highly recommend this experience especially at the beginning of your trip.”
“Thank you for guiding us around Meiji Shrine. Before the tour started, I felt a bit disappointed about the rain, but thanks to Atsushi’s warm hospitality and wealth of knowledge, I was able to enjoy a wonderful walk. He answered guests’ questions immediately and politely, and even provided extra information beyond what was asked. He is truly an excellent and impressive guide.”

Frequently asked questions
Why visit Meiji Shrine in the morning?
The shrine opens at sunrise and the tour runs at 08:00, before the tour buses arrive. You’ll experience the forest close to silent — by midday the main path can see thousands of visitors per hour.
Is there a dress code for visiting the shrine?
No formal dress code — normal travel clothes are fine. Your guide will walk you through the etiquette that matters: bowing at the gates, the hand-washing ritual, and how to offer a coin and a wish respectfully.
How much does brunch cost?
Brunch is pay-as-you-order at a local Harajuku café — most guests spend ¥1,000–¥2,000 (about $7–14). It’s kept separate so you can order exactly what you feel like.
Is this tour suitable for children?
Very much so — the walk is flat and shaded, the forest gives kids room to move, and the brunch stop breaks it up nicely. It’s our most family-friendly tour.
Can I stay in Harajuku afterwards?
Absolutely — the tour ends in the middle of Harajuku, and your guide will mark up a map of Takeshita Street, Omotesando, and quieter back streets worth your afternoon.
