Shinjuku Highlights Walking Tour

A 90-minute daytime walk through Shinjuku’s most iconic streets and the back alleys between them — Omoide Yokocho, Kabukicho, and the hidden corners guidebooks miss — in a group of 6 or fewer. Many guests take it on their first day in Tokyo and use their guide’s recommendations for the rest of the trip.

Why this tour

Step out of Shinjuku Station — the busiest in the world, with over 3.5 million people passing through daily — and Tokyo hits you all at once. Most visitors spend their first day overwhelmed, walking the same three streets as everyone else.

In 90 minutes, a local shows you how the puzzle fits together: the nostalgic lanes of Omoide Yokocho, the neon of Kabukicho, a quiet shrine nobody notices, and the shortcuts between them. You leave knowing where to eat, where to drink, and how to navigate the rest of your stay with confidence.

It’s deliberately scheduled in daylight — take it early in your trip, then come back at night (or join our evening food tour) knowing exactly where you’re going.

Good to know

  • Perfect first-day activity — guests consistently say the recommendations shaped the rest of their trip.
  • Easy pace, about 2.5 km of flat walking; comfortable shoes are all you need.
  • Families and children are welcome.
  • Runs rain or shine — Shinjuku’s arcades and covered lanes keep it enjoyable in light rain.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a good tour for my first day in Tokyo?

It’s the tour we recommend for exactly that. You’ll get oriented in the city’s densest district, learn how the train station works, and walk away with a personal list of places to eat and drink — most guests say it set up their whole trip.

How much walking is involved?

About 2.5 km over 90 minutes at a relaxed pace, all flat. We stop often for stories and photos, so it never feels like a march.

Is the tour family-friendly?

Yes — children are welcome, and the daytime route is comfortable for all ages. We pass the edge of Kabukicho, which is tame during the day.

What’s the difference between this and the evening food tour?

This is a daytime walking orientation (food and drinks not included); the Shinjuku Food & Drink Night Tour is a 3-hour evening experience with all food and drinks covered. They pair well — walk the area by day, eat through it by night.

Why do I need a 5-yen coin?

We visit a small shrine on the route where you can make a wish. In Japanese, “5 yen” (go-en) sounds identical to the word for “good fortune/connection” — your guide will tell you the full story.
